In the morning of 1893, a lady named Agnes Joaquim, an Armenian residing in Singapore, discovered an unfamiliar flower in her backyard. Expert identification brought her a pleasant surprise—it was a new hybrid orchid, a chance creation of nature, and she happened to be its first discoverer. “Hu Ji Hua” is the transliteration of Orchid in Chinese.

In Southeast Asia, this charming flower is adored for its vibrant yet refined allure, capturing the essence of the region’s spirit. The cultivation of orchids began at the Singapore Botanic Gardens 150 years ago. Hybrid experiments in 1928 led to the birth of the first grafted variety, turning orchid into the Lego of the flower world. Various new varieties, showcasing different habits, colors, and styles, have emerged since. Today, the global diversity of orchid has exceeded 30,000 varieties.

On April 15, 1981, the Papilionanthe Miss Joaquim discovered by Ms. Joaquim was designated as Singapore’s national flower, symbolizing “excellence, resilience, and immortality.” These flowers, flourishing vigorously from single blossoms to entire fields, embody the collective spirit of Singaporeans’ mutual endeavor. Nowadays, from potted plants to accessories and clothing, the versatile orchid has become a ubiquitous element in the daily life of the Singaporeans.

Since 1962, whenever a dignitary visits, the local government would bestow the highest diplomatic honor by naming a new orchid variety after the guest. Orchids named after numerous world leaders and celebrities from Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, China, the United States, and the United Kingdom blossom here. Orchids like “Princess Diana,” “Margaret Thatcher,” “Jackie Chan,” and “Stefanie Sun,” among others, enjoy popularity among fans, reflecting the personalities of those they are named after.

Recently, an orchid was named after a Singaporean nurse for the first time. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this extraordinary group of individuals received special recognition for their incredible contributions. The dedicated and modest everyday heroes, silently holding their ground in their respective fields, receiving such a beautiful accolade—doesn’t this have a touch of romance?
