99 Days! One-Armed Captain Xu conquers the "Mount Everest of Sailing"
Can you imagine? One person, one hand, 99 days, 26,000 nautical miles, circling the globe! This is the "crazy" sailing journey of Xu Jingkun, the one-armed captain from the post-80s generation!
In November 2024, the 10th Vendée Globe solo non-stop round-the-world sailing race kicked off, and Xu Jingkun was one of the 40 participants challenging this extreme event known as the "Mount Everest of Sailing." The rules are simple yet brutal: sail alone around the world with zero assistance!
Losing his left forearm at the age of 12, Xu joined the national sailing team at 16 and later became the "first one-armed global captain in human history." For this race, he pushed himself to the limit: eating instant noodles for 99 consecutive days, sleeping only 3 to 4 hours a day, and even climbing a 30-meter mast three times with one hand to repair the sails!
The most thrilling moment? Before a storm hit, a sail larger than a tennis court got stuck on the mast. Xu climbed with one hand, racing against the storm on a swaying boat, and successfully lowered the sail, averting disaster. And he did this three times in three days!
On February 18, 2025, Xu Jingkun crossed the finish line aboard the "Haikou," becoming the first Chinese captain in the history of the Vendée Globe solo non-stop round-the-world sailing race! With one hand, he rewrote the sailing history!
