Many Singaporeans, young and old, have kopi ("coffee" in Malay) in the morning. A cup of strong coffee is a great way to start the day.
Coffee was first introduced to Singapore by the Chinese from Indonesia, who were first introduced to it much earlier through trade with Arab merchants.
The local coffee, kopi, is made from Robusta coffee beans roasted at high temperatures with sugar and margarine, to caramelize the beans and sharpen the flavor.
Tried it myself…very sharp! The kind of sharpness that keeps you up till midnight with only one sip!
