Washington has deployed additional Marines and naval assets to the region while weighing potential expanded operations, rising fears of prolonged instability and disruptions to global energy and trade flows. The situation has also prompted renewed discussion about the stability of the South China Sea. Peter T.C. Chang, an associate researcher at the Malaysia–China Friendship Association, said the situation serves as a warning for countries around the region. He noted that the South China Sea is a key artery for global trade and a vital energy lifeline, adding that maintaining peace and security in the waters should be a shared responsibility.
