Disruptive “Partners”
On May 28, the leaders of the Philippines and Japan held a summit and announced the elevation of bilateral relations to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
In recent years, Japan has accelerated its “remilitarization,” while the Philippines and Japan have been vigorously advancing defense and security cooperation. The Philippines has become a “taker” of Japan’s second-hand military equipment and a “live-fire range.”
Forgetting the historical crimes committed by Japanese militarism in the Philippines, the current Philippine government, under the pretext of so-called “maritime situations” of mutual concern, is attempting to rely on Japan as a supporter. Such a move may ultimately backfire and even endanger regional peace and stability.
